This brûléed grapefruit recipe can be a sweet addition to breakfast or a light dessert! It is delicious, so simple to make, and a delight to eat the caramelized sugar topping.
I used to think I didn’t like grapefruit… I tried for years to try to enjoy grapefruit & grapefruit juice but to no avail, until recently when I tried brûléed grapefruit. It takes the best part of creme brûlée, and combines it with this sweet and sour citrus to make a delicious addition to any breakfast!
Ingredients Needed for Brûléed Grapefruit
Grapefruit Is the base of this recipe and you can use any variety you’d like to try! They are anti-inflammatory, contain fiber and are loaded with vitamin C.
Brown Sugar or turbinado sugar is used to make the caramelized sugar topping in this recipe.
To Make Brûléed Grapefruit
Making brûléed grapefruit is fairly simple. First, trim 1/2 inch peel from the bottom of the grapefruit to steady it. Then, if you want, use a paring knife to cut the sections to make eating the grapefruit later a little easier. This step is optional but often worth the effort.
Remove excess moisture from the grapefruits by placing cut side down on paper towels for a minute or two. Then, put grapefruits flesh side up again and sprinkle with about 1 tablespoon of brown or turbinado sugar. Now is the fun part – heat the sugar with your kitchen torch until it is nicely browned. If you don’t have a kitchen torch you can also place grapefruit(s) in your oven under the broiler setting and keep a close eye until the grapefruits are nicely browned, about 5-8 minutes. That’s it!

I love this idea but don’t have a kitchen torch. Have you tried broiling the grapefruit?
Yes, you can broil the grapefruit instead of having torch! It is not quite the same but gets the job done- just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.
What a fantastic idea! Just might be the only way I get my kids to eat grapefruit! Although I have to admit I didn’t acquire the taste for it until I was an adult.
Thanks! LMK if your kids like it!
